Chapter Twenty-One

Deals and Reveals

Ta’mat stared at the point in the ceiling where she knew the camera watched her. It was hidden, but she sensed it behind the tinted glass. Did they assume she didn’t know? That she would allow them to monitor her with impunity? She tolerated their tactless behavior because it suited her purposes, but her patience grew thinner every minute they kept her waiting.

After the initial contact at MIT and near disaster, she preferred avoiding more extreme tactics to convince the authorities on this Earth to give her what she wanted. Yet if Lewis did not return soon she would be required to seek him out. She would deal with no other. No one else deserved her attention, especially that worm Neville.

She tapped down the swell of emotion within her chest. How he leapt to save the guards from her reaction to their interruption. She’d nearly killed him. That would be...intolerable. Lewis served an important part of her plans. No permanent harm must come to him, even by her hand.

Ta’mat closed her eyes and stretched her mind out, feeling the sub particles of the surrounding walls, ending at the thick metal door—quite durable, but not without its microscopic flaws. It shouldn’t take a tremendous amount of dark energy to weaken it. However, energy focusing at such a small level required finesse.

She considered teleportation, but that required a tremendous amount of dark energy, and the explosive backlash would kill anyone within range. Lewis’ distance might not be far enough, and she felt his presence near Jeamon. She couldn’t risk either of them presently.

What is he telling Jeamon?

Ta’mat moved to the closest wall and pressed her palm against it. She needed to move quickly before Lewis destroyed her delicate illusion with Jeamon. Already his attitude towards her bordered on too liberal, if Lewis revealed her secret then Jeamon’s usefulness as an ally ended.

Is that really so terrible? Ta’mat grinned, feeling Cass squirm deep within their dual psyche. She’d broken loose earlier and wrestled to their surface consciousness, forcing Ta’mat to split her attention between the wormhole and suppressing Cass. An extremely close call indeed!

Anger and betrayal sharpened the tip of Cass’ mind nestled next to Ta’mat’s. Cass remembered now. Forgetfulness no longer dampened her urge for vengeance, making Jeamon’s position as a hostage more valuable.

Hear me, Cass? Challenge me and Jeamon dies.

More squirming and possibly a frustrated scream from her inner enemy.

Now settle down and let me work.

Cass’ mind resisted for a moment—pain filled Ta’mat’s head, an aching pressure searching for escape—then Cass complied and the pain dissipated. A permanent solution that spared Cass’ physical body while eliminating her consciousness was required, soon. Ta’mat didn’t want to continue splitting her attention.

Back to current issues. She concentrated on the fragile connection between this world and her original world where Gren awaited her signal. The smallest spark of energy sent through the branes of the universes took a large amount of energy, to aim it perfectly required most of her conscious thought, yet the actual time for the event lasted mere seconds.
